Sony Pictures announced that a new "Karate Kid" movie is officially in the works.
Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are officially set to reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han in an all-new Karate Kid movie.
On Tuesday, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio made the announcement in a YouTube video. The duo shared that they're looking for a new teen protagonist. Macchio, 62, was cast as 15-year-old Daniel LaRusso in the first Karate Kid, while Chan, 69, succeeded the late Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) as Mr. Han in the 2010 remake opposite Jaden Smith.
"We're starring in a new Karate Kid movie together," Macchio said in a clip for the Karate Kid announcement.
"That's big news, but we even have bigger news," Chan continued. "We're looking for the next Karate Kid."
"That's right — the global search for the star of our new film starts right now. So let's wax on, wax off, everybody," Macchio added, quoting Mr. Miyagi's line.
In 1984, Macchio rose to stardom playing Daniel LaRusso in "The Karate Kid" before reprising the role in sequels in 1986 and 1989. In the 2010 "Karate Kid" remake, Chan played Mr. Han, a kung fu expert based on Mr. Miyagi, portrayed in the original films by the late Pat Morita. Will Smith's son Jaden Smith also starred in that movie.
Although the studio didn't reveal any plot details, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the movie will "bring the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor." Sounds like a "Karate Kid" movie to me!
