Iconic singer Shafin Ahmed no more

Legendary musician and popular band star Shafin Ahmed passed away today, due to a cardiac-related incident. He was 63 years old at the time of passing.

He died at 6:50 am Bangladesh time on Thursday.

Shafin Ahmed's brother Hamin Ahmed confirmed his death to the media. He said that Shafin died due to a massive heart attack. "Shafin had a concert scheduled in Virginia on July 20 but had to cancel when he fell ill suddenly. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital and placed on life support as his condition worsened. He died there while undergoing treatment in Virginia, USA," he added.

Born in Kolkata on February 14 in 1961, the singer is the youngest son of Indian classical music singer Kamal Dasgupta and Bangladeshi singer Firoza Begum. Their family was traditionally a musical family.

He started his musical career at the age of 9. They moved to Dhaka in the late 60s. He was exposed to rock and roll music in the late 70s, when he went to London for higher education.

Shafin joined Miles in 1979, first as an acoustic guitarist, and later lead singer and bassist in 1991 when many of the past members had left and Miles reestablished themselves in the 90s Bangla rock music scene.

In 2009, he left Miles for problems with the other members for the ownership of Miles. But, in 2013 he returned to the band and appeared on the ninth album Reflections. He left Miles again in 2017 after having trouble with the members again but came back in late 2018 after resolving their issues. He announced in 2021 that he will be leaving the band for the third and final time.
