32 with critical injuries hospitalized in Gazipur gas cylinder fire: Dr Sen

Health minister Samanta Lal Sen on Thursday said those who suffered burn injury in a gas cylinder fire in Gazipur's Kaliakoir area on January 13, and have been undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute are not out of danger.

"Among the fire injured, five were admitted at ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and two were hospitalized at HDU (High Dependency Unit)," he told a board meeting with physicians of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, an official release said.

The health minister attended the board meeting and directed the physicians to provide better treatment facilities to the people. He enquired about health conditions of the burn injured people.

Acting Director of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Professor Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Khan, Professor (Radiology) Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Professor (Anesthesiology) Dr. Atiqul Islam and senior physicians, among others, were present at the meeting.

Associate Professor (Burn and Plastic Surgery) Dr. Hasib Rahman, Associate Professor (Burn and Plastic Surgery) Dr. Hossain Imam (IMU) along with other senior officers and doctors were present at the time.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is enquiring about the burn injured people round-the-clock and "She (Prime Minister) informed me that she will bear all expenses of the injured people.

Dr Sen said, "Among the burn injured people, physical conditions of some fire victims are very critical . . . We will try our level best for saving life of the severe injured people."  
 
One patient was admitted with 100 percent burns while three patients were hospitalized with 95 percent burns, while 16 hospitalized with over 50 percent burns, according to the meeting.
