A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced Evaly Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md Rasel and his wife, Shamima Nasrin, to one year jail each in a case filed for dishonouring bank cheques in 2021.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate-6 Md Mohiuddin also imposed a financial penalty equivalent to the cheque amount on each of them, according to Assistant Public Prosecutor SM Hossain Shahed.
He said in 2021, plaintiff Jasim Uddin Abid filed a case against Evaly CEO Russell and Evaly Chairman Shamima Nasreen on the charge of check bounce. The learned Judge sentenced both of them to imprisonment for one year and a fine equivalent to the amount of the bounced cheque.
Russell and Shamima were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion on 16 September 2021 following a complaint by a customer. They were later arrested in various cases and remanded for further investigation.
The couple has faced more than 350 cases across the country for alleged check forgery and other fraudulent activities. Russell was arrested in several of these cases.
