Journalists and other officials working in the newspaper industry are going to enjoy a six days holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims, and Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year.
The Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) has announced six-day holiday from April 9 to 14 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, and Pahela Baishakh.
NOAB made the announcement at a meeting held on Saturday (April 6).
As per traditions, holidays begin in newspapers’ offices from 29 Ramadan and journalists enjoy three-day holidays. It turns into four days in the case of the full Ramadan month (30 days).
This year, 29 Ramadan falls on 9 April and the holidays will continue until 12 April on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the NOAB said in a meeting.
Newspaper offices would be closed on April 14 in observance of Pohela Boishakh, hence NOAB notified in a letter that no newspapers will be published on April 15.
Furthermore, the leading journalists' organizations, the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (Duj), have requested Noab announce a special holiday on April 13.
Following today's meeting, NOAB members decided in order to declare April 13 a special holiday, resulting in a six-day holiday break for journalists.
