Indian, EU envoys meet PM’s Principal Secretary

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma and European Union outgoing ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley met PM’s Principal Secretary M Tofazzel Hossain Miah at the Prime Minister’s Office here on Thursday.

During the meeting with the Indian envoy, both of them laid special importance to smooth and timely implementation of the projects under Indian Line of Credit (LoC), news agency UNB reported.

Pranay Verma on behalf of his government expressed special thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her recent bilateral visit to India.

The Principal Secretary and the Indian High Commissioner agreed to work together to implement the MoUs and other documents signed during the Bangladesh PM’s visit to India.

During the farewell meeting with the EU outgoing ambassador, the European Union diplomat thanked the Bangladesh Government and the Principal Secretary for their full cooperation during his tenure in Bangladesh.

The ambassador assured that the European Union would work closely with the Bangladesh government on food security, nutrition, climate change and other issues.

The Principal Secretary put a special importance to the active participation of the European Investment Bank in the ongoing development process of Bangladesh.

In the meeting, they discussed about works with PKSF on food security, women empowerment and other issues.

About the graduation of Bangladesh from the status of a least developed country in 2026, Tofazzel Hossain said the process of formulation of the Smooth Transition Strategy (STS) by the Bangladesh government is already in its final stage and the high-level national committee is working on the implementation of this strategy.

He also informed that Bangladesh is regularly maintaining communication with the UNCDP and other agencies of United Nations to make Bangladesh's transition from a LDC smooth and sustainable.

PM reaches Washington DC from New York

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
