
Just hours after the protesters started a hunger strike at Kakrail today, the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Prof SMA Faiz, has announced that the government has decided to meet all demands of the teachers and students of Jagannath University.
"The government has taken a very positive decision regarding the demands of Jagannath University students, and this cooperation will continue," said Prof Faiz around 7 pm, after arriving at the demonstration site in Kakrail of the capital.
Professor Faiz said, "A decision has been made to increase the university's operational budget. Through the budget increase, a decision has been taken regarding the first demand of the students."
"At the same time, a decision has been made to start the construction of temporary dormitories very soon to resolve the accommodation crisis", he said, adding, "The process of implementing the second campus on a priority basis has already begun."
Later, he broke the students’ hunger strike by offering them water.
Earlier in the day, students launched their hunger strike at 3:45pm at the Kakrail intersection, dividing into groups by academic departments to press home their demands.
