
Veteran politician, freedom fighter and President of the Gono Forum, Mostafa Mohsin Montu, has passed away. He was 80.
Montu breathed his last at 5:10 pm while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital, confirmed Mahmud Ullah Madhu, a central leader of Gono Forum.
His namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) will be held at 9:00 pm following the Isha prayers at the Katabon Dhal Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque in the capital.
Born in 1945, Montu was elected as a member of parliament from Dhaka-3 constituency in the 1986 parliamentary election as an Awami League candidate.
During his student years, Montu became involved with the Chhatra League and went on to serve as chairman of the Jubo League, Awami League's youth front, general secretary of Dhaka district Awami League, and general secretary of the then unified Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League.
In 1992, he was expelled from the Awami League. Shortly afterwards, Dr Kamal Hossain left the Awami League and formed the Gono Forum.
Montu later joined the Gono Forum under Kamal Hossain's leadership.
In 2009, he was elected the general secretary of the party and remained active as its president until his death.
In the 11th national election in 2018, Montu contested from Dhaka-2 and Dhaka-3 seats as a Gono Forum candidate and from Dhaka-7 as a Jatiya Oikya Front candidate with the "paddy sheaf" symbol.
