National Consensus Commission (NCC) member Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar today said the commission is working to ensure that autocratic regime does not return to the country.

“We have presented a set of proposals aimed at preventing the return of autocracy. We are calling it The Draft National Consensus Charter,” he made this remark as the chief guest during a citizen dialogue held at the BRAC Learning Centre in Bashar Hat here in the district town, organized by the Citizen for Good Governance (SHUJAN).

He said “We believe that necessary changes and reforms are needed in our electoral system, constitution, local government, and governance structures."

"These reforms have been outlined in the charter, which will send a message to the government that the people's opinions and recommendations must be implemented so that the re-emergence of authoritarianism will permanently be ended,” he added.

In response to a question from journalists after the event, Dr. Majumdar said that to prevent authoritarianism, the government has formed 11 reform committees.

Among them, the heads of six committees have been brought together to form the National Consensus Commission and Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus serves as the head of these reform committees, he said, adding, “Our current effort is to build consensus. We have already reached consensus on several important reforms to prevent the return of authoritarian rule. We are now engaging in dialogue with political parties.”

The citizen dialogue was presided over by Md. Belal Uddin Shikder Rubel, President of SHUJAN’s Dinajpur District Chapter. Leaders and activists from the central body, Rangpur Division, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh districts addressed the event.

Over a hundred individuals, including journalists, social workers, and people from various professions from Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh participated in it.
