Referring to the opening of fire from the Myanmar border on a vessel along the Teknaf-Saint Martin sea route, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "the government's silence on the Saint Martin issue is an expression of servile attitude."

Mirza Fakhrul came up with this remark at a discussion meeting on the occasion of 'Black Day of Newspapers' at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday. The event was organised by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ).

The BNP leader said, people are being beaten at the border, water is not being given, but the government does not utter a word. The government has made Bangladesh a dependent state.

Mirza Fakhrul said China is leaning towards countries where autocracy rules. Autocracy is increasing all around the world.

He said, now every day is a black day for the entire nation. The present government, when it came to power in 1996, immediately suppressed freedom of press.

Expressing gratitude towards the journalists who worked fearlessly, Fakhrul said, it was the journalists who brought to light the issues of Benazir, Aziz and Anar.

He said, the army chief would commit fraud, the police chief would build an empire in the country by robbery, can you imagine?

Mirza Fakhrul said, "We have brought everyone from the left and the right to one place in the political arena. If journalists also come to a platform, then democracy can be restored to the country.
