Adulteration of food and drugs threatens public health

Just a few days ago, a gang was caught red-handed while making a sauce by mixing cloth dye with flour in savar. Similarly, another cycle was also caught while making different types of desserts, including sandesh with rotten syrup collected from various sweet shops. A few days ago, evidence of mixing cloth dye with meat was found in a joint operation of several organizations in the capital's New Market. Then the owner of that meat shop was fined Tk 1 lakh in cash.

Every year, tests by the Public Health Institute show evidence of various types of toxic ingredients in food products. Similarly, evidence of adulteration is found in medicines. It was caught in various raids.

The National Cancer Research Institute and Hospital in Mahakhali, the capital, is crowded with patients and their relatives. A similar crowd is at the National Institute of Urology and Kidney Diseases and Hospital in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area. The crowd is increasing day by day at the Neuro Science Institute and Hospital or the Liver Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. Public health experts say that adulterated food is playing a major role in increasing deaths from cancer, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, nerve disease, and lung disease in the country. It is also creating a high risk for maternal health. A mixture of such adulterants is sometimes detected in food, which is very dangerous for humans. It can be said that adulterated food in the country has become a great danger to public health. Sometimes in raids, people or organizations involved in adulteration are caught, but this trend cannot be stopped.

Experts say that the immediate effects of consuming chemically mixed or adulterated food can include vomiting with abdominal pain, dizziness, thin or indigestible stools, excessive sweating and weakness, and a decreased or increased pulse rate. As a result of some chemical reactions, it causes various physical complications, including anorexia, aversion to food, and inflammation of the colon and small intestine. In addition, metal-based adulterants can cause mild to complete kidney damage. There is a risk of digestive disturbances, diarrhea, and various complications due to adulterated food in the digestive system.

Due to the use of pesticides for the production of various types of vegetables and fruits, the poison remains effective in these foods for a certain period of time, which remains intact even after cooking. Apart from that, harmful carbides, industrial dyes, formalin, and parathion are used to make various kinds of delicious food and fruits attractive and to preserve them for a long time. As a result of taking these, the risk of suffering from various types of complex diseases, including kidney, liver, and asthma, increases. On the other hand, allergies, asthma, skin diseases, high blood pressure, brain strokes, and heart attacks can also occur.

President of the Bangladesh Public Health Association and former Director General of the Health Department, Professor Dr. Shah Monir Hossain, told the Khaborer Kago that adulterated food is mainly responsible for major non-communicable diseases in the country. On the one hand, in the greed of more people, a class of people adulterate the food. On the other hand, various types of chemicals are constantly added to food through environmental pollution and make it toxic. There are many chemicals that do not degrade at high temperatures. On one side, people adulterate the food; on the other hand, various types of chemicals are constantly added to food through environmental pollution and make it toxic. There are many chemicals that do not degrade at high temperatures. Once they enter the human body, they do not come out. Congestion drives people to death.
