Mashrafe named Sylhet Strikers captain in BPL

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza finally was named captain for the Sylhet Strikers, ending a speculation over his participation in the tournament.

He was the captain of the team in the last season when Sylhet ended up as runners up after losing the final to Comilla Victorians by seven wickets. But the fitness issue and Mashrafe's hectic schedule as the lawmaker of the country put a doubt on his participation.

Moreover, Najmul Hossain Shanto's presence in Sylhet Strikers team was the other reason that gave a belief that he would be the captain of the side, considering the fact that he is leading the national team in absence of Shakib Al Hasan.

But Sylhet eventually named Mashrafe the captain, considering his immense success in BPL as captain. He is the most successful captain in the BPL history, hoisting trophy for four times for three different franchisees.

Mashrafe led Dhaka Gladiators twice (2012, 2013) to clinch the coveted trophy and then he won it for Comilla Victorians (2015) and Rangpur Riders (2017). Imarul Kayes was the other captain to lift the trophy thrice, all for Comilla Victorians.

Mashrafe however made Sylhet Strikers a title contender from a mediocre team in the last seasons and came agonizingly close to win the trophy before losing it to a mighty Comilla Victorians.

Shakib Al Hasan, who is also elected an MP in the recently concluded JS Polls, refused to take up Rangpur Riders captaincy. As a result Nurul Hasan Sohan, who led the side playoffs last season is retained the captain for this season also. Shakib joined Riders from Fortune Barishal.

"We thought Shakib as the captain of our team this season but he himself informed us that he doesn't want to lead the side, so we announced Sohan as our captain," Rangpur CEO Ishtiak Sadek said Tuesday after a practice match between Riders and Durdanto Dhaka.

Liton Das was named captain for the defending champions Comilla, replacing its most successful captain Imrul Kayes. Kayes though had an envious record as captain, his batting form worried the franchisees in the last season.

Anamul Haque Bijoy was announced as captain for Khulna Tigers, who formed a low budget team. Tamim Iqbal however will lead Fortune Barishal as the franchise is eying a BPL title. Mosaddek Hossain will lead Durdanto Dhaka while Shuvagata Hom is the skipper of Chattogram Challengers.

Neymar quits PSG to sign for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Neymar said he was relishing “new challenges and opportunities in new places” after he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal Tuesday, becoming the latest big name lured to the oil-rich Gulf state.

The Brazil forward, 31, ends a six-year stay in the French capital and follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane in swapping Europe for the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places,” Neymar said in a statement from the Saudi Pro League.

“I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment,” he added.

Neymar was “in negotiations” on Sunday to become the latest football superstar to decamp for Saudi Arabia, leaving Paris Saint-Germain just as Kylian Mbappe was brought back in from the cold by the French champions.

A source close to PSG told AFP that 31-year-old Neymar “no longer figures in the club or manager’s plans” with the Brazilian immediately linked to Al-Hilal in the Gulf kingdom.

Another source in Saudi Arabia said that “direct negotiations” between Neymar’s agents and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) were ongoing.

PSG get better of Dortmund in Champions League opener

Paris Saint-Germain got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as a Kylian Mbappe penalty set them up for a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions had dominated the first half without overly troubling the Dortmund defence, but they went ahead four minutes after the break when Mbappe scored a spot-kick awarded for a Niklas Suele handball.

Achraf Hakimi added a memorable second, and PSG could have won the Group F encounter by a far more handsome margin in the end.

The result immediately puts them in control of the group, after AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 earlier, and coach Luis Enrique will hope they can build on this performance when they visit the English side next in a fortnight.

"It was an almost perfect evening," said Luis Enrique.
