Roma triumphed 2-0 against local rivals Lazio on Sunday to give Claudio Ranieri his biggest win since the veteran coach took charge of his boyhood club for the third time, reports AFP.

Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alexis Saelemaekers netted the goals in eight first-half minutes which gave Roma the points in a fraught atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Ranieri's team are up to 10th on 23 points, still 12 points behind Lazio who sit in the final Champions League spot but now with some breathing space from the relegation zone.

Six points separate Roma from Lecce, who sit just inside the bottom three and drew 0-0 with Genoa earlier on Sunday, as Ranieri slowly gets the capital club going back in the right direction.

Roma were in such disarray when the 73-year-old became their third coach of the season in November that relegation was not beyond the realms of possibility.

But after an encouraging draw at AC Milan, Sunday's display was another sign that a talented squad is starting to express itself.

Roma did not have it all their own way however and were camped in their own half after the break as Lazio pushed hard to get back into the match.

Valentin Castellanos and the impressive Nuno Tavares both went close to pulling a goal back while Loum Tchaouna's scuffed finish looped onto the crossbar just before the hour mark.

Castellanos was then sent off deep in stoppage time as Lazio ended a painful defeat with a pitchside scuffle.

Pellegrini's opener came nine minutes into his surprise start in Roma's attack alongside Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk as the 28-year-old had been out of favour and often booed by fans despite being a local boy and club captain.

Boyhood Roma fan Pellegrini had been accused by angry supporters of being among a clutch of players who pushed for Daniele De Rossi to be sacked in September.

But he kissed the badge of his boyhood club after brilliantly whipping home his first league goal of the season following a lightning breakaway.

Eight minutes later and Roma took a surprise early two-goal lead through Saelemaekers, who after being put through by Paulo Dybala forced a fine save from Ivan Provedel and then tapped home the rebound.

Pellegrini was given a standing ovation when he was replaced by Stephan El Shaarawy midway through the second half, a sign that he has won supporters back to his side and that some normality is returning after largely awful opening half to the season.

Neymar quits PSG to sign for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Neymar said he was relishing “new challenges and opportunities in new places” after he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal Tuesday, becoming the latest big name lured to the oil-rich Gulf state.

The Brazil forward, 31, ends a six-year stay in the French capital and follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane in swapping Europe for the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places,” Neymar said in a statement from the Saudi Pro League.

“I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment,” he added.

Neymar ‘in negotiations’ over Saudi move as Mbappe returns to PSG good books

Neymar was “in negotiations” on Sunday to become the latest football superstar to decamp for Saudi Arabia, leaving Paris Saint-Germain just as Kylian Mbappe was brought back in from the cold by the French champions.

A source close to PSG told AFP that 31-year-old Neymar “no longer figures in the club or manager’s plans” with the Brazilian immediately linked to Al-Hilal in the Gulf kingdom.

Another source in Saudi Arabia said that “direct negotiations” between Neymar’s agents and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) were ongoing.

PSG get better of Dortmund in Champions League opener

Paris Saint-Germain got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as a Kylian Mbappe penalty set them up for a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions had dominated the first half without overly troubling the Dortmund defence, but they went ahead four minutes after the break when Mbappe scored a spot-kick awarded for a Niklas Suele handball.

Achraf Hakimi added a memorable second, and PSG could have won the Group F encounter by a far more handsome margin in the end.

The result immediately puts them in control of the group, after AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 earlier, and coach Luis Enrique will hope they can build on this performance when they visit the English side next in a fortnight.

"It was an almost perfect evening," said Luis Enrique.
