Diet for jaundice

Jaundice  occurs due to an increased level of the yellowish bile pigments, known as bilirubin, in the blood. Bilirubin is a by product of the body’s natural process of breaking down and removing old and damaged red blood cells.

The most common symptom of jaundice is yellowing of the skin, eyes, tongue and urine. Depending on the underlying cause, other symptoms may include fatigue, headache, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, abdominal pain, skin itching and pale-colored stools.

There are several home remedies that can help treating jaundice 

Stay well-hydrated with water and clear fluids to flush out bilirubin. Opt for low-fat foods to reduce stress on the liver, avoiding fried or greasy items. Reduce sugar intake and keep salt in check to support liver function. Split your meals into smaller meals instead of eating 3 large meals in a day.

Radish

Radish is a perfect remedy for jaundice as it helps in detoxification of the wastes and toxins. It is an alkaline vegetable and belongs to the cruciferous family. It is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and have traces of manganese and vitamin B6. It also removes excess of bilirubin from the blood. 

Tomato

Tomatoes contain a compound called lycopene, which is a potent antioxidant and helps with detoxification of the liver. It also contains variety of bioactive ingredients and helps to improve symptoms like fatigue and tiredness. Have a glass of tomato juice with a little salt and pepper early in the morning. 

Almonds and cardamom mixture

Soak 6-8 almonds, 5 cardamoms, 2 dry dates in water for a night and then peel the almonds and make a paste of all three ingredients and consume it. The published study suggests consumption of almond prevents increase of liver enzyme in liver disease.

Beet root

Drink half cup beet root juice daily. Literature suggests beet root juice helps to improve blood supply to organs and reduces oxygen use. The result is improved energy and individual suffering with liver disease feels improved energy production.

Watermelon

Consuming of water melon and plums are also essential for healing jaundice.

Sugarcane 

Sugarcane juice aids in strengthening the liver and helps in its proper functioning.

Yogurt

The probiotics in it help in decreasing the bilirubin levels by fighting against harmful bacteria and increasing immunity.

Indian gooseberry (Amla)

It is filled with Vitamin C and other essential nutrients that help in combating jaundice by improving liver functioning and balancing the serum bilirubin levels.

Spinach

The fibre content of this leafy green is very high which strengthens liver and helps its cells to regenerate. If you are suffering from jaundice or any other liver condition, drinking a glass of spinach juice is recommended. Add chopped carrots with the juice.

Barley

Barley is known for its diuretic and antioxidant properties. It help in taking toxins and excess bilirubin out of your body. Mix a teaspoon of roasted barley seeds with a glass of water and add honey to the mixture. Drink it every day.
