Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam today said the deadline of nomination form submission for the upcoming polls will not be extended.

"The deadline for the submission of nomination papers ended at 4 pm today. Bangladesh Election Commission thinks that there is no scope to extend the deadline of nomination paper submission for the 12th national elections," he told a press conference at Nirbachan Bhaban here.

The EC secretary said the aspirants have already submitted their nomination papers to the returning officers and assistant returning officers and on Friday it will be able to disclose that how many parties are taking part in the 12th national polls on January 7.

About the electoral code of conduct, Jahangir said the senior secretary of the Home Ministry has already met the Commission, while the Inspector General of Police (IGP) informed it of the overall situation, saying the country's law and order situation is under control.

He said as some candidates have breached the electoral code of conduct, EC election probe committee has summoned them.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
