The first session of 13th Jatiya Sangsad began at 11:00am on Thursday.
At the beginning of the session, new Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected through voice votes.
Liberation War Affairs Minister Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, an MP from Bhola-3 constituency, was elected as new Speaker while Barrister Kaiser Kamal MP from Netrakona-1 (Sadar-Durgapur) constituency was elected as Deputy Speaker unanimously through voice votes.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni proposed the name of Hafiz Uddin Ahmed MP (Bhola-3) as the Speaker, which was seconded by Raqibul Islam MP (Khulna-3).
Then Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, who was presiding over the House temporarily, placed the proposal on vote. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected speaker uncontested by voice vote.
Later, M Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu (Natore-2) proposed the name of Kayser Kamal MP (Netrakona-1) as the candidate of Deputy Speaker, which was supported by ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan (Lakshmipur-4). Later, the proposal was also passed by voice votes in the House.
Leader of the House and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman delivered welcome address, while senior parliamentarian Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain chaired the House.
Following their elections, the session was adjourned for some time and the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker took oath.
Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to both Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
