Hotter weather, below-normal rainfall likely in Bangladesh in June

Rainfall across Bangladesh is likely to remain below normal in June while both day and night temperatures are expected to stay above average, according to the long-range weather forecast prepared by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The forecast was finalised at a meeting of the Expert Team on Long-Range Weather Forecasting held at the Storm Warning Centre in Dhaka on Monday, reports UNB.

During the meeting, experts analysed various meteorological data and information from May 2026 including weather observations, upper-air weather patterns, atmospheric charts, climate model outputs, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) associated with El Niño and La Niña conditions, said BMD.

Forecasts and guidance from World Meteorological Organization (WMO)-recognised institutes and Global Producing Centres (GPCs), including ECMWF, JMA, NOAA, IRI-Columbia University, the APEC Climate Centre (APCC), RIMES and C3S, were also taken into consideration.

According to the forecast, rainfall is likely to remain below normal across the country during June.

Meteorologists predicted that one to two low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal during the month with one of them having the potential to intensify into a monsoon depression.

The southwest monsoon is expected to set in over Bangladesh during the first half of June, it said.

The country may experience light to moderate thunderstorms on five to seven days during the month.

Both daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to remain above normal nationwide, the forecast said.

It also indicated the possibility of two to three mild to moderate heatwaves in parts of the country.

Mild heatwaves occur when temperatures range between 36°C and 37.9°C, while moderate heatwaves are recorded when temperatures range between 38°C and 39.9°C.

The country's major rivers are expected to flow within normal levels throughout June.

However, isolated heavy rainfall may cause temporary rises in water levels in rivers across the northern, northeastern and southeastern regions.

In the agricultural outlook, experts forecast average daily evaporation rates of 3.5 to 5.5 millimetres and average daily sunshine duration of 6.0 to 8.0 hours during the month.
