Death-row convict Sohel Rana in the rape and murder of child Ramisa at Pallabi in the capital, apologized to the High Court, said Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajol today (Sunday).
Talking to reporters after presenting the jail appeal hearing of accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter at the High Court bench of Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Saiful Islam on Sunday.
The Attorney General said the High Court has accepted the jail appeal of Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter, the death-row convicts in the rape and murder of child Ramisa. In the jail appeal, accused Sohel Rana who was sentenced to death in Ramisa murder case by a lower court, confessed about the incident and apologized to the High Court.
He also claimed that he was a drug addict.
According to the Attorney General, the state will not take any time in hearing the death reference and jail appeal in the rape and murder case of a child. Regular hearings will be held.
Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajol also said that the paper book of the appeal in the rape and murder case of child Ramisa will be prepared soon.
Meanwhile, in his appeal to the High Court bench, death-row convict Sohel Rana said, "I'm financial insolvent. I used to work as a mechanic in an autorickshaw garage. I was addicted to Yaba and drugs."
He further said there were frequent quarrels and arguments in the family due to his adrug addiction. "I was not involved in any crime before. The incident that happened to the victim in this case happened when I was addicted to drugs and intoxicated. The incident happened entirely unintentionally, unconsciously due to my financial insolvency, family feud and drug addiction. I did not understand how the incident had happened. I have none to pay for the education of my only son and support the family. I made a grave mistake and I apologize for it."
However, death-row convict Swapna Akter, wife of convict Sohel Rana, claimed her innocence and sought acquittal in prison appeal.
On June 11, death-row convicts Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter filed a jail appeal with the High Court through the jail authorities. The High Court accepted the convicts' jail appeals for hearing on Sunday.
