A formal extradition request along with case documents have been sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring former IGP Benazir Ahmed back to Bangladesh.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated it to reporters at his office at the Secretariat on Saturday (June 20, 2026) after presenting awards to police personnel for their contributions to maintain law and order.
He said a 144-page formal extradition request containing case documents, has been sent to the UAE through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Salahuddin said people thought that police force became inactive. "But they have got it back today (Saturday). The police personnel are performing so much duties after an elected government took over power that the government is now rewarding them."
Regarding the Awami League, he said, "I do not consider the Awami League a political party. It is a mafia group. Their activities are banned. However, instructions have been issued to remain vigilant against any activities ahead of their founding anniversary on June 23."
