BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the Awami League government has become more reckless and authoritarian after seizing power through farcical elections on January 7.

"The government has increased the level of suppression against the leaders and activists of pro-democracy opposition parties including BNP to hold on to state power," the BNP leader added.

Mirza Fakhrul made this remarks in a statement signed by Taiful Islam Tipu, office secretary of the party on Monday (February 26).

Mirza Fakhrul Islam expressed concern over the denial of bail to BNP National Executive Committee member and former Dinajpur-4 Constituency Member of Parliament Akhtaruzzaman Mia and Chirirbandar Upazila BNP Joint Convener Nur Alam Siddiqui Nayan in a false, fabricated and politically motivated case.

He said due to the lack of rule of law and good governance in the country, the activists participating in the democratic struggle are being deprived of justice.

The incident of Akhtaruzzaman Mia and Noor Alam Siddiqui Nayan being denied bail and sent to jail is a continuation of excessive oppression by Awami League government, he added.

The BNP Secretary General said, "I am deeply concerned about the continuous imprisonment of opposition leaders and activists with the help of the government through denial of bail and immediately call for the withdrawal of the false cases filed against Akhtaruzzaman Mia and Noor Alam Siddiqui Nayan and their unconditional release."
