As post-poll violence continues to rock West Bengal, Trinamool Congress has announced that it would be moving court against the assembly election results that overthrew the Mamata Banerjee-led party's 15-year-old rule, according to the Indian media.
With the assembly term ending today (Thursday), West Bengal chief electoral officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal has already met Governor RN Ravi and submitted the gazette notification of the poll results, clearing the decks for the Governor to invite the BJP to form the next government.
Meanwhile, the situation in West Bengal took a serious turn on Wednesday night when Chandranath Rath, executive assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district.
Police said Rath was returning to his home in Barasat when his car was stopped by men on one or two motorcycles in the Doharia area. A man came close to the car window and fired three rounds at him, the sources said. Rath was seated next to the driver, who also sustained serious injuries.
Swearing-in likely on May 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is the BJP's central observer for West Bengal, is likely to fly in today, and a legislative party meeting is expected on Friday (May 8).
Even as the BJP is yet to announce its pick for the chief ministerial post, party sources have indicated that the swearing-in ceremony could be held on May 9, which also coincides with Rabindranath Tagore's birthday (25 of Baisakh).
