Govt. prioritizes swift compensation for victims of human-elephant conflict: Rizwana

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting peaceful human-elephant coexistence, saying that streamlining and revising current regulations is underway to ensure prompt and accessible compensation for individuals impacted by the attacks of elephants.

She emphasized the importance of taking immediate measures to support the affected farmers. 

Joining virtually last night in a review meeting organized to determine actions for resolving human-elephant conflict, Rizwana, also the adviser of the Ministry of Water Resources, delivered her remarks as chair of the session.

She stressed on the need for timely measures to ensure the survival of elephants. To that end, she also put forth the importance of activating Elephant Response Teams with skilled individuals from local communities, and equipping them with walkie-talkies and other necessary tools. 

She also highlighted the urgency of planting elephant-friendly trees.

In the meeting, the adviser further said that during the Boro season, additional manpower must be deployed under special arrangements. She also called for increased participation from local residents and the launch of training programmes to raise awareness among school and college students. 

To enhance public awareness about elephants, she instructed the production of videos and their dissemination through social media platforms.

Issuing a warning, she firmly said that filming any kind of video, including TikTok, near elephants must be strictly prohibited.

The meeting was attended by Chief Conservator of Forests Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests Md. Rokibul Hasan Mukul, Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur Torafdar Mahmudur Rahman, eminent wildlife expert Professor Dr. Ali Reza Khan, Conservator of Forests of Wildlife and Nature Conservation Circle Md. Sanaullah Patowary, Project Director of the Elephant Conservation Project ASM Zahir Uddin Akon, along with local leaders.

 

PM reaches Washington DC from New York

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

Deal to ease trade in taka-rupee to be signed as Hasina

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
