Banned Awami League presidium member, former minister, and valiant freedom-fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has died. He was 83.
He breathed his last ay about 10:00am on Wednesday (May 13) at Square Hospital in Dhaka while underwent treatment there, his family sources said.
The body will be taken to Chattogram, a family member said.
He will then be buried at his family graveyard in his home city of Chattogram after his first namaj-e-janaza at Jamiyatul Falah premises and second namaj-e-janaza after Asr prayer at Mirerswarai in the port city.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, he faced 12 cases, including charges related to murder. He had been in custody since October 27, 2024 in connection with those cases.
His family appealed to the interim government for his release through a formal letter as his health was deteriorating.
On August 14 last year, he was released after securing bail in all the cases filed against him.
Mosharraf was born on January 12, 1943 at Dhoom union. After his graduation from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in 1966 he joined politics and was elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) of what was then East Pakistan in 1970.
Mosharraf, also a freedom fighter, was awarded the Independence Award in 2019 for his contribution to the Liberation War. He was elected a member of parliament in 1973, 1986, 2008, 2014, and 2018.
He served as the minister of Housing and Public Works till January 6, 2019.
Mosharraf was arrested on October 27, 2024 by police.
