Budget session begins today

The second session of the 13th National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) and its first budget session will begin today (Sunday). The session is scheduled to start at 3:00pm.

During the session, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will place the proposed national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal on June 11. 

The budget is expected to be passed on June 30 following discussions by members of both the treasury and opposition benches.

According to sources at the Parliament Secretariat, all preparations for the budget session have already been completed. Preparatory work began after President Mohammed Shahabuddin convened the session.

The House will sit at 3:00pm today under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. Before the sitting begins, the Parliamentary Business Advisory Committee will meet to finalize the duration and agenda of the session.

Security has been tightened in and around the Jatiya Sangsad Complex ahead of the session. To ensure security, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Saturday (June 6) imposed a ban on carrying firearms as well as all forms of processions, demonstrations and rallies in several areas of the capital from Saturday.

According to the agenda published by the Parliament Secretariat, the first day's proceedings will begin with the nomination of the panel of chairpersons and the presentation of obituary references. This will be followed by the question-and-answer session.

Questions related to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Industries, Energy and Mineral Resources Division, and Power Division have been listed for discussion. Notices submitted under Rule 71 seeking attention to matters of urgent public importance will also be disposed of during the sitting.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
