The Appeallate Division of the Supreme Court has granted bail to arrested economist and former chairman of Janata Bank Prof Abul Barakat in an anti-corruption case.
The Appeallate Divison passed the order on Monday (June 8).
As a result, there is no bar to release her from jail.
However, the Appeallate Division directed him to deposit his international passport to court.
Prof Abul Barakat was the chairman of the Department of Economics of Dhaka University and president of the Bangladesh Economists Association. He served as chairman of Janata Bank during the previous Awami League government.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Abul Barakat over the allegations of embezzling Tk 297 crore through AnonTex Group. The anti-graft watchdog filed the case against 23 people including Abul Barakat on February 20 last year. Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch arrested him at his home in Dhanmondi Road No.3 on July 10.
