The High Court has dismissed the writ petition filed by Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna seeking a direction to remove his name from the list of defaulters, which means he will not be able to participate in the upcoming national elections, according to state lawyers.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Bazlur Rahman and Justice Manjur Alam issued the order on Wednesday (December 24).
Senior lawyer Ahsanul Karim and barrister Jyotimay Barua argued for Manna in the court, while Deputy Attorney General Shafiqur Rahman appeared for the state.
Shafiqur Rahman told reporters that Mahmudur Rahman Manna had filed a writ petition seeking to remove his name from the Bangladesh Bank loan defaulters’ list. As the court dismissed the writ petition, he will not be able to participate in the election.
However, Manna’s lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said they would appeal against the High Court’s order dismissing the writ petition.
Earlier, on December 10, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited's Baragola branch in Bogra issued a 'call back notice' to Afaku Cold Storage Limited, a company led by Mahmudur Rahman Manna, to recover a loan of Tk 384.76 crore.
The notice instructed repayment by December 18, warning of legal action in case of failure to pay within the stipulated time.
