Commuters suffer as heavy rain inundates roads in Dhaka

Heavy downpour caused waterlogging in different areas of the capital on Wednesday morning, causing immense suffering to commuters.

The rains coupled with thunderstorm started around 9: 30 am and continued till 11:30 am, reported UNB.

Many people were seen wading through ankle-deep water in Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Firmgate, Badda, Moghbazar, Murpur and Khilkhen areas to reach their destinations.

Office-goers faced difficulties to reach their destinations due to lack of transport in the morning.

The rainwater also entered private vehicles, and CNG-run autorickshaws traveling along the main roads, leading to engine damage and breakdowns.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast rain or thundershowers in all divisions including Dhaka in 24 hours commencing 9am on Wednesday.

 

“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal,Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi and Khulna divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country,” said a Met office update.

The country’s highest 85mm of rainfall was recorded in Panchagarh in 24 hours till 6am on Wednesday.

However, a mild heat wave is sweeping  Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and it may abate from some places.

Day and night temperature may fall by (1-3)°c over the country, according to the BMD.

The country’s highest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi and Pabna’s Ishwardy at 38 degree Celsius over the past 24 hours till 6 am Wednesday while the lowest temperature in Bandarban at 24 degree Celsius today.

Meanwhile, a trough of low lies over West Bengal to Northwest Bay. Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.

PM reaches Washington DC from New York

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

Deal to ease trade in taka-rupee to be signed as Hasina

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
