11 more AL men held in anti-sudden procession drive

Detective Branch (DB) of police, during separate raids in the capital arrested 11 more members of the Awami League (AL) and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) as a part of ongoing drive against sudden procession.

Separate DB teams arrested them from the city's Jatrabari Shantinagar, Uttara-14 Sector, Chandrima Model Town area under Mohammadpur Police Station, Shawrapara, Bhashantek, Bangshal, Motijheel, Lalbagh, Motijheel and Badda areas on Wednesday and Thursday, said a DB press release.

The 11 arrested individuals have been identified as 33 no ward Awami Jubo League Vice President Asadullah Shiplu, 45, 8 no ward Awami League Vice President Shakil Ahmed, 56, 8 no ward Awami League Member Md. Habibur Rahman Habib, 45, Dhaka North City BCL Co-Secretary Aslam Chowdhury Emon, 24, Jatrabari Thana AL leader Mobasher Rahman, 55, Joint General Secretary of Kushangal Union Awami League of Nalchiti Police Station of Jhalokati District Md. Ruhul Amin, 54, Former Mayor and Joint Secretary of Kotalipara Upazila Awami League Md. Kamal Hossain Sheikh, 62, Joint General Secretary of Uttara Paschim Thana Sramik League Md. Babul, 55, Secretary of Bangladesh Land Port Sramik League and Chairman of Balijuri Union of Taherpur Police Station of Sunamganj District Md. Azad Hossain, 52, Office Secretary of Ward No. 99 Jubo League of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Md. Rezaul Karim (Rana) and Joint General Secretary of Mirpur Police Station Awami Swechchhasebak League Md. Shahjalal, 45.

The DB stated that those arrested were allegedly involved in creating public panic and conspiring to destabilize the country by organizing and participating in unauthorized processions throughout Dhaka.

With the latest arrests, a total 55 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated bodies have so far been arrested in the ongoing drive began five days ago.

Legal proceedings are currently underway against the detainees, the statement added.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
