The motorcycle used in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, Inqilab Mancha spokesman and possible independent candidate for Dhaka-8 seat, has been identified by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2.
The RAB-2 also arrested its owner Abdul Hannan from Chand Udyan area under Mohammadpur Police Station in the city on Sunday morning. Then he was handed over to Paltan Police Station as a suspect. Arrested Abdul Hannan is the son of Md Abul Kashem and he hails from Sadar upazila in Chapainawabganj district under Rajshahi divison. Hannan is known to Faisal Karim Masud, the main suspect in attempt to murder Hadi. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest him.
The RAB-2 said the number of the motorcycle used in the attack is 54-6375.
The RAB-2 Commander Md Khalidul Huque said said they were probing whether Hannan was involved in the incident of attempt to murder. The motorcycle number was collected from the video footage with the help of information technology. Then it was verified from the BRTA office.
The RAB-2 Commander said motorcycle owner Hannan is making confusing remarks under question. Once he is saying the bike was sold and again he is saying that the bike was at garage. However, he could not show any prooof in support of his statement.
The incident took place on Box Culvert Road, between DR Tower and Baitus Salam Jame Mosque, around 2:25pm on Friday last, said police. Critically injured Hadi was first taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). After an operation there, he was shifted to the ICU (intensive care unit). As his condition was worsened, he was taken to Evercare Hospital.
Talking to journalists in front of Evercare Hospital, Dr Arif Mahmud told journalists that attack on Osman Hadi's brain is critical. Though his heart is functioning, the condition of his brain is very bad. "So, nothing can be said right now. If necessary, we may have to lengthen our waiting time."
