The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is set to deliver its verdict today (Sunday) in a case filed over the shooting of Amir Hossain -- a youth who was seen hanging from a building cornice during the July 2024 mass uprising at Rampura in the capital during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement as well as the killing of two others -- Nadim and Maya Islam.
A three-member bench of the ICT-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, will deliver the verdict. With the court's permission, the verdict presentation is being broadcast live.
The tribunal fixed for today (Sunday) to deliver the verdict after the conclusion of the second round of arguments on June 15, 2026.
There are a total of five accused in the case. The only arrested accused former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Rampura police outpost Chanchal Chandra Sarkar is currently in custody and was brought to the tribunal in the morning.
The remaining four accused are currently absconding. They are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, former OC of Rampura Police Station Md Mashiur Rahman, and former SI Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan.
On July 19, 2024, Md Nadim Hossain was shot dead by police at Banasree in Rampura. On the same day, Amir Hossain clung to a rod on the cornice of an under-construction building to save his life; police fired 6 bullets at him, hitting both of his legs. However, he survived. Besides, a bullet fired bypolice passed through the head of a 7-year-old child, Basit Khan Musa, and struck his grandmother, Maya Islam, killing her.
Charges were framed against the accused by the tribunal on September 18 last year. A total of 13 prosecution witnesses, including the investigating officer, testified before the tribunal. The prosecution has pleaded for maximum punishment for all the accused.
