Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, dismissed the notion that any single individual was the mastermind behind the July uprising, stating that 180 million (18 crore) people of the country were the real masterminds of the 2024 July mass uprising.
“We do not accept that there was a single mastermind behind this movement. We want to give credit to the young generation. The real mastermind is 180 million people of Bangladesh,” he said while speaking on a point of order in Parliament.
The opposition leader said those who led the uprising to success deserve the highest respect.
“I think we all, from the core of our hearts, respect and love those under whose leadership the uprising succeeded,” he said, adding that their dignity and rightful place must be preserved.
Shafiqur Rahman said it was he who first protested the remark made by former interim government Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus during his USA visit introducing former Adviser Mahfuj Alam as the mastermind of this July movement.
“Even when Dr Yunus, during his visit to the United States, referred to one person as the mastermind, I was the first to protest and say that we do not accept the idea of a single mastermind behind this movement,” he said.
