The new President will be elected during the regular parliamentary session in September, as there is no situation requiring a special session.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman stated it while responding to journalists' questions at CIRDAP in the capital on Saturday (July 25) morning.
When asked about the lawsuit against the recently outgoing President Mohammed Shahabuddin, the Law Minister said, "No comment at this time regarding the lawsuit of the former President."
It may be mentioned that Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as the 22nd President of the country on April 24, 2023. According to the constitution, his five-year term was scheduled to end in April 2028. However, nearly two years before the expiration of his term, he stepped down from his position, citing health reasons.
According to constitutional provisions, if the office of the President becomes vacant, the Speaker performs the duties of the President until a new President takes office. Following that sequence, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will now serve as the Acting President. At the same time, according to the constitution, a new President will be elected by the National Parliament within 90 days.
Md. Sahabuddin's tenure of nearly three years was one of the most eventful periods in the country's political history. It was during his term that the Awami League government fell through a mass uprising. Following the conclusion of the interim government's tenure, the 13th National Parliamentary Election was held. During this period, he administered the oath of office to three different heads of government, which is an exceptional event for a president of the country.
