Chairman of Jatiya Party and the opposition leader of the National Parliament Golam Mohammad Quader rised his voice against Quota system in parliament, said that the quota system in government jobs will destroy Bangladesh’s pursuit of a discrimination-free society.

He made this remark in the closing speech of the 2024-25 fiscal year budget session of the 12th National Parliament on Wednesday.

The Jatiya Party leader said, in the name of the spirit of the Liberation War, the permanent settlement of a large quota system for recruitment in government jobs will destroy the main objective of independence which was build up for a justice and discrimination-free society. In any situation, creating partisan among the people of the country never brings good, he added.

Regarding the quota system, the leader of the opposition party in the parliament said, until 2018, there was a 56 percent quota in the first, second, third and fourth class of government jobs in Bangladesh (30 percent freedom fighter quota, 10 percent for women, 10 percent for residents of backward districts, 5 percent for minority ethnic groups and 1 percent reserved for the disabled). Apart from this, the remaining 44 percent were recruited on merit.

He said in 2018, the meritorious students demanded that only freedom fighter quota should be canceled from the first, second, third and fourth classes in government jobs. In view of the movement, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular canceling the policy of all quota system in the first and second class recruitment but in the third and fourth class, the quota system remains as before.

GM Quader said in 2021, some children of freedom fighters filed a petition in the High Court challenging the part of the freedom fighter quota cancellation in that circular. On June 5, 2024, the court issued the judgment of the writ, where the cancellation of the section reserved for freedom fighters in the circular of public administration was declared invalid.
