Shun coaching business to ensure quality education: President

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Thursday asked all concerned to shun coaching business to improve the standard of education in the country.
 
"A section of scrupulous people along with some teachers are directly and indirectly making profits from coaching centers . . . Shun the coaching business to improve the quality of education," the President told a function at Osmani Memorial Auditorium here this afternoon marking the "World Teachers' Day", reports BSS.
 
He urged the government, ministry, teachers, parents and all concerned to work together to check question paper leak. Necessary steps should be taken to make the teaching method international standard so  that students can move forward successfully in the global competition, the President said. 
 
"We want every student of the country to become well-educated as well as good citizen too and contributes to the advancement of the country at the national and international levels," he mentioned. 
 
Mohammed Shahabuddin also advised all the teachers and guardians to strive to show the way to develop the talent of the children. 
 
Strongly criticizing the disgusting competition for getting GPA-5, the President said the students are failing to get admission into medical, engineering or public universities despite securing GPA-5. 
 
Mohammed Shahabuddin said, "The respect and dignity of teachers in the country's social system is still much higher than any other profession . . . But due to social degradation, the respect and dignity of the entire teachers' community cannot be undermined for a few misguided individuals."
 
He congratulated all the meritorious teachers, who were awarded with memento and crest, for their outstanding contribution in the field of education.

The President said the teachers would contribute to materialize Bangabandhu's dream of building "Sonar Bangla" by making modern, science-minded and advanced citizens with good leadership qualities. 
 
Referring to the training of the primary and secondary level teachers abroad, President Shahabuddin directed the relevant ministries and institutions concerned to monitor the teachers activities in the classroom after returning from overseas training. 
 
"Your effective role in the formation of the society and the overall country's development is essential . . . You will teach young students the differences between right and wrong, truth and falsehood, mankind and patriotism as well as the responsibility towards parents. Behave with the students like parents," the President added.
 
He mentioned that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalized 36,165 private primary schools at a time in 1973 with deep compassion for teachers and realizing the importance of education in the development of the country.
 
The President highlighted the various aspects of the multifaceted plan adopted and implemented by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government in the field of education. 
 
Bangabandhu's daughter and Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nationalized a total of 26,193 private and registered primary schools in 2013. Besides, the government is regularly providing nearly 100 per cent financial benefits to the teachers of about 28,000 MPO-affiliated educational institutions, he added. 
 
The Head of State called upon all concerned, including the Ministry of Education, to take necessary measures to get rid of any discrepancy in teachers' salary scale, incidental allowances and promotion. 
 
The teachers and the education administrations would work together to ensure a quality of education system in the country and raise the status of teacher, he hoped.
 
The President called upon the government as well as teachers, guardians and students to take specific steps to improve the quality of education in all educational institutions and to reduce the urban-rural disparity in the education system. 
 
Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, MP, State Minister of Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain, MP, Deputy Minister of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, MP, representative of UNESCO Dhaka office Dr Susan Vize, Dhaka University Prof Lafifa Jaman, Education Ministry's Secondary and Higher Education Department Secretary Soleman Khan, Dhaka Government Laboratory High School Senior Teacher Ismat Ara Mumtaz and Khilgaon Shantipur High School Assistant Teacher Pallab Kumar Bhowmik ,among others, spoke there.
 
On the occasion, the President expressed sincere gratitude and respect to all the teachers of the world.  A documentary on "World Teachers' Day 2023" was screened on the occasion. Seven meritorious teachers were felicitated on the occasion. 

PM reaches Washington DC from New York

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

Deal to ease trade in taka-rupee to be signed as Hasina

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
