Heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream which have triggered severe floods and landslides across seven districts in the country, have claimed 54 lives and affected over 10 lakh people.
According to the latest reports from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the natural disaster has claimed 54 lives and affected over 10 lakh people.
They died and injured due to heavy rainfall, floods for the water from the upstream, and landslides.
Currently, 1,55,311 families remain marooned by floodwaters in the affected districts. A total of 6,09,411 people have been affected in seven districts -- Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj -- due to floods and heavy rush of water from the upstream.
The reports reveal that 31, among the 54 people died, have lost their lives in Cox's Bazar district alone. Besides, 13 died in Chattogram, 6 in Bandarban, 3 in Rangamati and one in Moulvibazar.
District-wise Casualties and Injuries
Cox's Bazar District: Most affected with 31 deaths (18 locals and 13 Rohingyas) and 24 injuries. 1 person remains missing.
Chittagong District: Second highest with 13 deaths and 12 injuries.
Bandarban District: 6 deaths and 2 injuries caused by landslides and torrents.
Rangamati District: 3 deaths recorded so far.
Moulvibazar District: 1 death recorded so far.
Khagrachhari District: No deaths reported, but 1 person was injured.
Overall Flood Damages
Affected Areas: A total of 59 upazilas, 334 unions, and 12 municipalities across 7 districts have been flooded.
Government Shelters and Relief Efforts
Shelters: The government has opened 1,042 shelters for the affected people, where 38,422 individuals have already taken refuge. Chittagong has the highest number with 415 shelters housing 16,821 people.
Relief Allocation: A total of 8,950 tonnes of rice and Tk 46 million in cash have been allocated by the government to the affected districts. Dry food and other emergency supplies are also being distributed.
Special Grants: To strengthen rescue and relief operations, a special grant of Tk 2 million each has been provided to Rangamati and Bandarban districts from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
