The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has declared that they  will not allow traders to engage in business activities on the city streets during the holy month of Ramadan.

“Although offices close at 3:30 pm on the occasion of Ramadan, it is seen that from 5:30 pm to Iftar time, most of the vehicles leave for their destinations in a hurry,” said Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Munibur Rahman.

Addressing a press conference on 'traffic management and guidance in the holy month of Ramadan' at DMP Media Center, he said most of the vehicles try to go to their destinations in a hurry, but it creates unnecessary traffic congestion at various important intersections.

“In the existing reality of the metropolis, if a signal is activated for a one-lane vehicle at a three-lane intersection, the other lanes have to be temporarily closed, so traffic division faces over-vehicle pressure,” he mentioned.

Munibur said it is also a challenge to control line management before iftar, as most people move to their residences before iftar. Therefore, he urged the city dwellers to start their journey towards home as soon as the offices are closed.

The Additional Commissioner highlighted various steps taken during the first 10 days of Ramadan to maintain traffic management smoothly.

He also sought cooperation for keeping roads clear, as many cars were seen parking, which is enough to narrow down roads and create obstruction to the movement of vehicles.

The traffic division has taken strict measures against car parking since the beginning of Ramadan. City dwellers were urged not to park their vehicles illegally and haphazardly on the roads.

Mentioning that passengers usually stand for a long time at the turning points of various important roads instead of  designated bus stops, he said, “This causes disruption in the movement of vehicles on the roads, and vehicle movement becomes slow. Passengers were requested to wait at designated stoppages for transport.
