The Appellate Division has again postponed the hearing of former Jamaat-e-Islami acting secretary ATM Azharul Islam's appeal against the death sentence in a crimes against humanity case to May 6.
When the state applied for time to hear the 28th application on Tuesday (April 22), a bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed fixed a new date for the hearing. The matter will be heard by the full bench of the Appellate Division on that day.The order said that the appeal of Jamaat leader Azhar will be at the top of the Appellate Division's agenda.
Senior advocate Ehsan Abdullah Siddiqui and advocate Shishir Monir will present the hearing of the petition.
Earlier, the party's Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Jobair, and Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal came to the Appellate Division to hear the appeal of Jamaat leader Azhar.
On February 26, the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed granted ATM Azharul Islam permission to appeal against the death sentence in the crimes against humanity case.
Jamaat leader ATM Azhar was charged with six crimes against humanity, including genocide, murder, kidnapping, rape, detention, torture and serious injuries, and looting and arson in the Rangpur region during the Liberation War in 1971.
