Hurling water bottle: JnU student handed over to family after apology

The Jagannath University (JnU) student who hurled a water bottle at Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam has sought apology and given a written undertaking to refrain from such actions in the future, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said on Saturday.

In a press release issued early Saturday, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, said the student, Mohammad Hossain, was handed over to his mother on Friday evening following legal procedures, reported UNB.

According to the DMP, Adviser Mahfuz Alam was holding a discussion with demonstrating students near Kakrail Mosque on Wednesday night when a bottle was suddenly thrown at him from the gathering, hitting him on the head.

Reviewing CCTV footage and applying digital analysis, police identified Mohammad Hossain as a prime suspect and picked him up from a mess in Alubazar Pukurpar area of the capital around 9 pm on Thursday.

His mess-mates were informed immediately after the detention and by 9:55 pm he was taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office for interrogation over the incident, police said.

“During questioning, which followed all legal procedures and upheld his rights, Hossain admitted to his involvement at around 12 pm on Friday (May 16) and apologised. He also expressed willingness to submit a written undertaking pledging not to repeat such behaviour,” said the DMP official.

“After consultation with senior officials, he was released and formally handed over to his mother. All steps, including his detention, interrogation, and release, have been documented in the General Diary (GD),” added Talebur Rahman.
