Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has stated that the Election Commission will take necessary steps regarding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain’s assumption of office as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation once it officially receives a copy of the verdict from the Appellate Division.

He made the remarks on Thursday (May 29) while responding to questions from journalists at the Election Commission headquarters.
 
“We didn’t get the copy of the verdict of the Appellate Division till now. After getting the copy, we will examine the legal aspects and will do what we have to do,” he said.

The Appellate Division today disposed of a Leave to Appeal with an observation.

The Appellate Division’s full bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after hearing the arguments of the petitioner’s lawyer and the counsel of Ishraque.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
