The death toll from the devastating fire at a garment factory and chemical warehouse at Rupnagar in Dhaka's Mirpur has risen to 16, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Talha bin Jasim, an officer of the media cell of the Fire Service Headquarters, confirmed this information on Tuesday (October 14).
“The number of fatalities in the Rupnagar fire incident has increased to 16. Initially, nine bodies were recovered, and later, seven more were found during the ongoing operation,” he said.
Earlier, the fire incident occurred at the pharmaceutical company, named "Cosmic Pharma", and a nearby chemical godown at Rupnagar, Mirpur, at about 11:40 am on Tuesday. The first fire service unit arrived at 11:56 am. Initially, five units tried to contain the fire, followed by an additional seven units.
