Nishi Rahman, accused of drowning of eight puppies in a local pond putting them in a sack at Ishwardi in Pabna district was sent to jail on Wednesday (December 3) afternoon following her arrested on Tuesday (December 2).
Earlier, she was produced before a Pabna court from Ishwardi Police Station. After the hearing, judge Tariqul Islam ordered to send her to jail instead of granting bail.
Nishi Rahman was arrested from a rented house adjacent to Rahimpur Girls School in Ishwardi Municipal Sadar. She is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Noyan, an officer of the Small Farmers Foundation.
Earlier at about 11:30 at night, Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun filed a case at Ishwardi Police Station over the drowning of eight puppies in a pond at Ishwardi Upazila Parishad premises tying them up in a sack without the knowledge of their mother.
Aklima Khatun said the case was filed at 11:30pm on behalf of the Director General of the Department of Livestock under Section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act, 2019.
The 38-year-old Nishi Begum was named as the only accused.
It may be mentioned that the mother dog has been living beside the Ishwardi UNO's residence for a long time. She gave birth to eight puppies a week ago. Failing to find the puppies on Monday morning, she started running here and there. Later, it was known that Small Farmers Foundation official Hasanur Rahman Nayan couple threw the puppies into a pond of upazila parishad keeping them in a sack. The bodies of the puppies were recovered on late Monday morning. Later, those were buried.
Photos of the dead puppies were first posted on social media on Monday morning and quickly went viral.
The incident sparked public outrage, with people demanding legal action against those responsible.
