Water levels in four major rivers—Bhogai-Kangsha, Someshwari, Mogra in Netrokona, and the Manu River in Moulvibazar—are flowing above danger levels, causing flooding in low-lying areas, according to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
Heavy to very heavy rainfall across different regions of the country has raised concerns of flooding, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
It has warned that five districts may experience floods under the current condition.
Flooding has already begun in parts of Moulvibazar and Netrokona, while rising river levels are increasing risks in three other districts.
FFWC Sub-Divisional Engineer Partha Pratim Barua said low-lying areas of Moulvibazar, Netrokona, Sylhet, Habiganj, and Sunamganj are at risk of flooding. Water has already started entering low-lying regions in Moulvibazar and Netrokona, mainly due to continuous heavy rainfall across the country.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Met office forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of all eight divisions over the next 96 hours.
Meanwhile, water levels in four rivers have already crossed danger levels. Data from the FFWC shows that the Bhugai-Kangsha, Manu, Someshwari, and Magra rivers are flowing above danger marks. Except for the Manu, the other three rivers flow through Netrokona.
According to the Water Development Board, 60mm of rainfall was recorded in Durgapur, Netrokona, in the past 24 hours. Continuous rain and upstream flows have pushed the Bhugai-Kangsha River to flow 82cm above the danger level.
Besides, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers have risen by more than one to one-and-a-half meters.
