There are widespread allegations of harassment, torture, and retrenchment of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) officials and employees at different branches of the bank by the unruly activists of a particular political party.
Sufferers say that officials at different branches of the bank are opposed to sit on their designated desks. They are thrashed and their mobile phones are also taken away. Even the ordinary people who had strongly opposed it on different social media, were also not spared. They were implicated in false cases filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
A former official of Companyganj Branch of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) in Noakhali district alleged that his colleague and local Jamaat leader and workers thrashed him mercilessly as he videod them on mobile phone when they didn't allow them to sign on office attendance registrar and opposed him to sit on his designated seat.
Md Mofizul Islam, who is an inhabitant of Chattogram, said his relatives brought him from there on the following day. The situation was so unfavourable that didn't dare to seek legal remedies subsequently.
Islam said: "We were intercepted in various ways when we went to the office on September 28, 2025. We were asked not to sign in attendance registrar and sit on our designated desks though there was no circular about it. Md Monirul Islam, principal officer who was the GB (general banking) in-charge at the branch, tried to thrash me. At that moment, some of my colleagues came forward and saved me. When the branch manager came, I was taken to his chamber. The manager asked me to wait at the dining room."
He said: "After some time, the manager brought some local leaders and workers of a political party inside the bank. At the directive of manager Harunur Rashid, they dragged me holding my collar, thrashed me, and also threatened to kill me. As there was a closed-circuit camera inside the manager's room, they dragged me to the washroom and beat me over there. Later, the CCTV footage was deleted. The branch's GB in-charge, investment in-charge, and other videod the incident, but none of them approched to save me. They also forcibly took my cellphone and all the live videoes deleted from it. My mobile was with them till late at night. At the same time, they also took away the bank's ID card from me forcibly. Then they forced me to get out of the office. Otherwise, they threatened to kill me."
He further alleged that he didn't receive any kind of legal cooperation after going to the police station concerned. Rather, the manager (Operations) of the branch Mahmudul Hasan filed a general diary (GD) against me at the police station.
Islam further said he joined the Islami Bank as an assistant officer in February 2019. "I worked at the Companyganj branch of the bank six years and eight months. During the period, I was promoted to the posts of 'Junior Officer' and 'Officer.' Now, I'm totally jobless. My age will cross 32 years just after a month. So, there is no scope for me to receive any new job anywhere. I'm married and my wife is simply a housewife. Overall, I've been passing my days through heavy pressure."
Contacted, Islami Bank's Companiganj branch manager Harunur Rashid told the Khaborer Kagoj that there was a trouble with customers on that day. "I had nothing to do there. Nothing was happened with us. Rather, I went to resolve the matter. Then I called in police. Police forced those to get out of the bank who created trouble. We didn't file any GD with the police station concerned."
The then OC of Muradnagar Police Station Zahid said, "I'm not the in-charge of that police station anymore. Now, I work at the Detective Branch in Chattogram after being transferred. No such untoward incident had happened when I was there. I don't know anything else in this regard."
The victims alleged that leaders of the Islami Bank's CBA (collective bargaining agent) harassed the officers creating mobs. They took away the mobile phones from many of the officers and forced to leave the offices intimidating and threatening them.
In spite of the efforts to make contact with the Head, HRD Kausar Alam over phone, he declined to talk to the Khaborer Kagoj.
Implicated in case though he didn't work in bank
Mohammad Borhan Uddin told Khaborer Kagoj: "Neither I work at Islami Bank nor at any other bank. I just write on social media supporting the causes of retrenched officers and employees. I have stood in favour of the suppressed. Just because of it, the Islami Bank authorities filed a case against me with Motijheel Police Station on October 9, 2025. I was made the prime accused in the case filed under the Cyber Security Act. Four more people were also implicated in the case. All of them were the bank's staff. I wrote in favour of the retrenched officer and employees from my social accountability.
The man went abroad before the case was filed and learnt about the case staying abroad.
