Acting Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament Professor Mujibur Rahman said that they will hold a rally at Motijheel Shapla Square on October 28.
He called upon all its leaders and supporters to join in the rally on Saturday.
In an emergency press briefing, Mujibur Rahman said Jamaat, as a “democratic and systematic” party, sought a free, transparent and participatory general election following the resignation of the current government and the appointment of a non-partisan caretaker rule.
He said that the government has ignored all demands to release the party chief Shafiqur Rahman along with other leaders and supporters of the party, withdraw false cases and lower the prices of daily commodities to bring them within the reach of the people.
On the contrary, the government has continued mass arrests, Mujibur added.
Earlier this week, Jamaat planned for street protests on Oct 28 to coincide with rallies by the BNP and Awami League. But on Wednesday, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Jamaat will not be allowed to hold any rally in Dhaka as it is not a registered political party.
“In such a situation, the whole nation is united in a single cause. We’ve already announced a peaceful rally at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar on Oct 28 to demand the abolishment of the parliament, resignation from the government and a general election supervised by a caretaker government,” Mujibur said.
“We call on the citizens and party workers from all levels to not get confused by the government’s provocations, unconstitutional and anti-democratic activities,” he added.
