Bangladesh taste 192-run defeat to Sri Lanka in 2nd Test

Bangladesh suffered a 192-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the second and final cricket Test by paying the price of its reckless batting at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today.

Resuming the Day 5 game at 268-7 and requiring 243 runs still for an unlikely victory, Bangladesh were bundled out for 318 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz staying unbeaten on 81.

They lost rest of the three wickets within the first one and half hour of the game in the morning session on Day 5.

The defeat was ensured when Sri Lanka left Bangladesh a record chase of 511, with five sessions to survive.

Mominul Haque hit a 50 while Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das played 30 plus knock to take the game to fifth day and also helped Bangladesh go past 200 runs for the first time in five Test innings, dating to last December.

Knowing that a defeat is on the cards, Miraz batted aggressively to raise the prospect of his only second century in the Test cricket but lacked support from the other end.

He reached his sixth Test fifty in the fourth over of the day off 62 balls by smashing Kamindu Mendis a boundary.

However Mendis in that over brought a breakthrough for the side, when he dismissed Taijul Islam (14) caught by Nishan Madushka at gully.

Hasan Mahmud (6) and Syed Khaled Ahmed (2) failed to give Miraz support for a longer period.

Both of the batters were dismissed by Lahiru Kumara, leaving him 19 runs short of his century. He played 110 balls for his 81, including 14 fours.

Kumara claimed 4-50 to be the best bowler for Sri Lanka in this innings. Kamindu Mendis who made 92 not out and 9 following his centuries in both innings (102 and 164) in the first Test, took 3-32 and was adjudged man of the match.

He was also adjudged man of the series for his.

Sri Lanka posted 531 in its first innings with six batters getting past half-century marks, making it the highest total without any batters scoring a century.

The visitors then dismissed Bangladesh for 178 runs, and took a 353-run lead but decided against follow-on. However despite a batting collapse in the second innings, Sri Lanka were able to leave Bangladesh chasing an improbable target after declaring on 157-7.

Sri Lanka also won the first Test by 328 runs. Having won the game, Sri Lanka kept its record intact of not losing any test on Bangladesh soil.

The visitors won the three-match T20 series earlier by 2-1 before losing the ODI series by same margin.

Neymar quits PSG to sign for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Neymar said he was relishing “new challenges and opportunities in new places” after he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal Tuesday, becoming the latest big name lured to the oil-rich Gulf state.

The Brazil forward, 31, ends a six-year stay in the French capital and follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane in swapping Europe for the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places,” Neymar said in a statement from the Saudi Pro League.

“I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment,” he added.

Neymar ‘in negotiations’ over Saudi move as Mbappe returns to PSG good books

Neymar was “in negotiations” on Sunday to become the latest football superstar to decamp for Saudi Arabia, leaving Paris Saint-Germain just as Kylian Mbappe was brought back in from the cold by the French champions.

A source close to PSG told AFP that 31-year-old Neymar “no longer figures in the club or manager’s plans” with the Brazilian immediately linked to Al-Hilal in the Gulf kingdom.

Another source in Saudi Arabia said that “direct negotiations” between Neymar’s agents and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) were ongoing.

PSG get better of Dortmund in Champions League opener

Paris Saint-Germain got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as a Kylian Mbappe penalty set them up for a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions had dominated the first half without overly troubling the Dortmund defence, but they went ahead four minutes after the break when Mbappe scored a spot-kick awarded for a Niklas Suele handball.

Achraf Hakimi added a memorable second, and PSG could have won the Group F encounter by a far more handsome margin in the end.

The result immediately puts them in control of the group, after AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 earlier, and coach Luis Enrique will hope they can build on this performance when they visit the English side next in a fortnight.

"It was an almost perfect evening," said Luis Enrique.
