Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believes his side's pace attack is slightly ahead of Pakistan's based on their recent performances.

This comment came ahead of the two-match Test series beginning at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur tomorrow (Friday).

Pakistan have long been regarded as one of the strongest fast-bowling nations in world cricket, producing generations of high-quality pacers. But Bangladesh's seam attack has made giant stride in recent years, both at home and overseas, Shanto said.

Bangladesh's pace bowlers played a decisive role in the Tigers' historic 2-0 Test series sweep against Pakistan in 2024.

Pacers Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam shared 21 wickets in that series.

In comparison, Pakistan's fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali and Naseem Shah managed 10 wickets combined.

Speaking ahead of the new series, Shanto praised the development of Bangladesh's fast bowlers and said they now compare favourably with Pakistan's traditionally strong pace unit.

"Pakistan's pace bowling has always been very strong, there is no doubt about that," Shanto told reporters. "But considering the way our pacers have bowled over the last few years, I would say our pace attack is slightly ahead at the moment."

The Bangladesh skipper said the improvement in skill and consistency among the fast bowlers has given him added confidence as captain.

"Our pacers have improved a lot in terms of skill, which gives me extra confidence as a captain," he said.

"I want the batters to take responsibility by scoring big runs in the first innings. If we can put enough runs on the board, the bowlers can win matches for us. The right balance between pacers and spinners will be important," he continued.

One of the key figures in Bangladesh's attack is Nahid Rana, currently regarded as the fastest bowler in either squad.

The young pacer has consistently crossed the 150 KMPH mark and is expected to play a major role in the series.

Shanto expressed confidence in Nahid's preparation and form ahead of the contest.

"I have known Rana since he was very young and I know how seriously he prepares himself," Shanto said.

"Having a dynamic fast bowler like him is always a big advantage for a captain. He is in very good form and I hope he will give his best in this series," he added.

Neymar quits PSG to sign for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Neymar said he was relishing “new challenges and opportunities in new places” after he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal Tuesday, becoming the latest big name lured to the oil-rich Gulf state.

The Brazil forward, 31, ends a six-year stay in the French capital and follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane in swapping Europe for the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places,” Neymar said in a statement from the Saudi Pro League.

“I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment,” he added.

Neymar ‘in negotiations’ over Saudi move as Mbappe returns to PSG good books

Neymar was “in negotiations” on Sunday to become the latest football superstar to decamp for Saudi Arabia, leaving Paris Saint-Germain just as Kylian Mbappe was brought back in from the cold by the French champions.

A source close to PSG told AFP that 31-year-old Neymar “no longer figures in the club or manager’s plans” with the Brazilian immediately linked to Al-Hilal in the Gulf kingdom.

Another source in Saudi Arabia said that “direct negotiations” between Neymar’s agents and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) were ongoing.

PSG get better of Dortmund in Champions League opener

Paris Saint-Germain got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as a Kylian Mbappe penalty set them up for a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions had dominated the first half without overly troubling the Dortmund defence, but they went ahead four minutes after the break when Mbappe scored a spot-kick awarded for a Niklas Suele handball.

Achraf Hakimi added a memorable second, and PSG could have won the Group F encounter by a far more handsome margin in the end.

The result immediately puts them in control of the group, after AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 earlier, and coach Luis Enrique will hope they can build on this performance when they visit the English side next in a fortnight.

"It was an almost perfect evening," said Luis Enrique.
