Bangladesh created history again by defeating Pakistan by 78 runs in the second Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, completing a 2-0 series whitewash and moving up to the 5th in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
Chasing a target of 437 runs, Pakistan were bowled out for 358 during the first session on the fifth and final day. The victory gave Nazmul Hossain Shanto's side another memorable Test success on home soil.
After resuming play following a brief rain interruption, Mohammad Rizwan and Sajid Khan added crucial runs, building a valuable 50-plus partnership that took Pakistan past the 350-run mark.
Bangladesh finally made the breakthrough after nearly 50 minutes of play when Taijul Islam dismissed Amir Jamal for 9 runs. It was Taijul's fifth wicket of the innings.
Pakistan then added quick runs and briefly increased pressure on the hosts. Rizwan moved close to a century as Pakistan reduced the target further.
However, Shariful Islam broke the crucial partnership by dismissing Rizwan for 94. His wicket left Pakistan at 358 for 9 and ended the visitors’ hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Mohammad Abbas joined Naseem Shah for the final wicket, but Bangladesh quickly wrapped up the innings to seal the victory.
Litton Das was named player of the match for his crucial century in the first innings, which ultimately proved to be the difference-maker, while Mushfiqur Rahim was named player of the series.
The match started 15 minutes late on the final day because of a wet outfield. Despite the delay, Bangladesh maintained control and completed a historic series sweep against Pakistan.
Brief scores: Bangladesh 278 (Litton Das 126; Khurram Shahzad 4-81) & 390 (Mushfiqur Rahim 137; Khurram Shahzad 4-86) beat Pakistan 232 (Babar Azam 68; Nahid Rana 3-60) & 358 (Mohammad Rizwan 94; Taijul Islam 6-120) by 78 runs
