Indonesia has unveiled Southeast Asia’s first-ever bullet train on October 2, 2023. President Jokowi Joko Widodo inaugurated the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train.
The high-speed rail line, officially named WHOOSH is part of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative and largely funded by Chinese state-owned firms, opened to the public on Sunday.
The $7.3 billion project, spans 86 miles and is overseen by the joint state venture PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (PT KCIC). Equipped with a safety system that can respond to emergencies such as earthquakes and floods, the trains are designed to withstand Indonesia’s tropical climate.
The bullet train features eight cars, all equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging points, and can accommodate up to 601 passengers. It offers three classes of seats – first, second, and VIP.
