A massive fire broke out at a hotel in Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning (June 3, 2026), killing at least 21 people and leading to the rescue of more than 40 others, according to Indian media.
The fire broke out at the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast hotel in the congested Hauz Rani locality, in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, killing at least 21 people, according to the Press Trust of India.
As thick smoke engulfed the building and flames spread rapidly through the premises, several people were seen breaking window panes and calling for help.
Several of the deceased are foreign nationals, primarily from Central Asian and African countries.
All of those rescued have been taken to a hospital, according to the Delhi Fire Services.
"A woman holding a young child jumped from the third floor after local residents spread mattresses on the ground below in an attempt to save those trapped inside," an eyewitness said.
Witnesses said the woman landed on one of the mattresses along with the child and may have sustained some injuries. She was immediately sent to a nearby hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to the victims families, and Rs 50,000 to the injured in the fire incident.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. As rescue operations conclude, investigators are now piecing together the timeline of the blaze, examining the building's structural history, and probing allegations of delayed emergency responses.
