After public outcry over allegations of neglect by the children of a 75-year-old woman whose body was recovered from a flat in Mirpur, Dhaka, her son AKM Anisur Rahman, a member of the Mongla Port Authority with the rank of Joint Secretary, has been withdrawn from that position and attached to the Ministry of Public Administration.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Wednesday, attaching Anisur, a joint secretary, to the ministry.
According to the order, he has been directed to report to the ministry by Thursday. Failure to do so will result in his being deemed automatically stand-released from his current post.
On May 31, police recovered the body of Nurjahan Begum, 75, Anisur’s mother, from a flat in Mirpur-11 after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999.
According to preliminary findings, she died seven to eight days earlier.
Another son of the woman is a professor at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), while the other lives abroad.
The woman's daughter, a schoolteacher, lives in an adjacent room of the same flat but allegedly did not inform authorities of her mother's death.
